When choosing a name for your character, there are several things to keep in mind. First, the Arythian name policy forbids names with "haquerish" spellings, names of mobs on the mud, and common modern names, like Amy or Tom. Nor should you pick the name of someone well known historically or a name from a fantasy novel. You want a name that is at least vaguely medievalish, like Gareth or Marie.

Don't pick a long name that is hard to spell. Darethillumski may be a way cool name, but people may often misspell it. Keep in mind that, as you become known, folks will tend to truncate your name. Malmort is a fine name, but you may not wish to be called Mal for short.

There are a number of web sites on names. Below are some of the most common.

[The Medieval Names Archive] - Very nice name site.

[The Model Languages site] - doesn't have names, but has very good information on the various ways names are formed in different cultures (very handy, if you want a patronymic, or something like that).

[Alfabette Zoupe] - has long lists of names, with their pronunciations.

[The SCA College of Arms] - has some very good articles on constructing medieval names.

You do not need to pick an authentic medieval name. If you can make something up, that's fine. If you aren't sure if the name you have chosen is appropriate for Arythia, or are totally stuck, feel free to email any of the staff members. We are more than happy to help.
